Sea Walls Cozumel 2019

After four years, PangeaSeed Foundation returned to the island of Cozumel to create a new series of public artworks to highlight locally pressing environmental issues affecting both marine and terrestrial habitats, including mangroves, coral reefs, and the jungle.

Over the course of 11 days, each artist created a large-scale public mural to highlight a particular topic of concern to the ecology and people of Cozumel. The issues related to the three overarching themes, biodiversity loss, endemism, and ecosystem vulnerability.

More About the Project

Immersive Excursions

The participating ARTivists and our team had the opportunity to experience Cozumel's unique, fragile ecosystems in the lead-up to painting week. The island's coral reefs, mangrove habitats, and cenotes are all under immense human pressure.

Locally Funded

For all of our Sea Walls projects, we work hard to raise most, if not all, funds locally, creating community buy-in and laying the foundation for a long-lasting project legacy. For this activation, more than 80 local businesses and individuals actively helped make it a reality.

Youth Outreach

In collaboration with our partners at Proyecto Panorama, we visited a public school in a low-income neighborhood to paint a Sea Walls murals and talk about the importance of protecting our oceans. The school is currently transitioning to more sustainable practices on their campus, including the creation of a new school vegetable garden.
