Story Behind This Mural

Artist Statement

I painted a splendid toadfish, a fish endemic to the island of Cozumel because few people, especially island residents, know of it (the majority of tourists recognized it). The girl with the fishing line represents the damage that we humans are causing to the oceans and beaches; from marine pollution and unbridled tourism, to the preservation of our dying coral reefs. She also represents the fact that even if our actions look benign, there is always a dark side. The collateral damage to this endemic species and the reefs will continue to worsen until we become more conscientious of our negative impact on our natural resources.
