Story Behind This Mural

The artists from the Nueve Arte Urbano collective collaborated on this massive mural demonstrating our human connection to coral reefs, and with it also the negative impact we can have on these preciously important ecosystems.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, also known as the Great Maya Reef, stretches 1,000 km, making it the most expansive barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. As such, its health is indispensable to the economies of Caribbean coastal communities in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.

However, coral reefs across the globe are under immense pressure, with climate change and coastal development threatening their existence.
