Story Behind This Mural

Artist Statement

Our design speaks to the issue of plastic pollution and illegal dumping by showcasing the interaction between animals and objects that eventually end up in the ocean. Here we can see a crab picking up what seems to be a pearl necklace while sitting over a pile of debris. This is a representation of what looks like a treasure to us and can be devastating to our natural environment. There's a phrase that comes to mind when we look at this image, and I think it makes perfect sense in this instance, "one species' treasure is another species' trash.”

The Focus

Plastic Pollution

Take Action

Reduce your own plastic footprint by

  • Using a reusable water bottle and avoiding drinks bottled in plastic
  • Bringing your own bag, cup, utensils, straw, etc.
  • Shopping in bulk, reducing packaging waste
  • Choosing reusable and compostable goods over less sustainable materials
