Story Behind This Mural

Artist Statement

Mangroves are our coastline's first line of defense. In addition to serving as a home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, mangroves protect our coasts from strong waves caused by storms and erosion from rivers and ocean tides. Today, these coastal habitats are threatened by overdevelopment, rising sea levels, and shrimp farming. Society must adapt to prevent the destruction of these ecosystems. Our artwork depicts a colorful coastal community protected by mangroves hosting a variety of wildlife, including unique species like the Roseate Spoonbill, Trunk Fish, and Great Egret. If we want to continue to enjoy nature's beauty, we must return the favor and protect our mangroves and forests.
