The Future of the Oceans is in Your Hands

Artist Statement

Nusa Penida is a small island off the coast of Bali, Indonesia which is profoundly affected by plastic pollution and other destructive human impacts.

The community has no infrastructure or current solutions to recycle all the plastic and no processing plant for all the trash on the island. It simply piles up, or is burnt, and enters and pollutes the oceans.

The island is such a beautiful and magical region of the world with caring local people, who always carry a smile on there faces.

The idea of my mural is to bring awareness about plastic pollution and its impacts on the oceans to the local people. It features two central characters fishing in a sea of plastic, a simple depiction but one that is easily translated. Science estimates that by mid-century plastic will outnumber fish in the oceans. If plastic pollution is not addressed on Nusa Penida and coastal communities around the globe, then eventuality all there will be left is a sea of plastic. Is this the future we want to leave behind for future generations?

• Bringing your own bag, cup, utensils, straw, etc.
• Shopping in bulk, reducing packaging waste
• Choosing reusable and compostable goods over less sustainable materials
