Story Behind This Mural
Hoghikuri collaborated with Cozumel local artist Melhor on this mural, incorporating key species who call the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef their home, as well as colors reminiscent of healthy coral reefs. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, also known as the Great Maya Reef, stretches 1,000 km, making it the most expansive barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. As such, its health is indispensable to the economies of Caribbean coastal communities in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.
However, coral reefs across the globe are under immense pressure, with climate change and coastal development threatening their existence.
