Story Behind This Artwork

Artist Statement

I decided to do a shark to help raise awareness of plastic in the seas. This shark is not jumping out of the water to catch a seal as so many do. This shark is leaping out of the water to escape. It’s trying to evade the plastic that tangles around its fins but most of all the microbial plastic now running through its veins. The shark doesn't understand that it cannot actually change its situation, but it is attempting in the only way it knows. The seas are now full of microscopic plastic. It’s in the fish it’s in the whales it’s in the sharks, and yes, you guessed it: it’s now in us!
