Artist Statement

Carbon Punishment is a multimedia project designed to amplify the brutality of ocean acidification.

The phrase eludes to humanity's toxic relationship with carbon emissions, and the typography is a nod to Tampa Bay's death metal heritage.

Each wall is accompanied by a brutal grindcore track composed specifically for this mural. The tracks were written and produced by Miami metal-heads Ale Campos (Las Nubes) and Eric Hernandez (Wrong, Torche) and contain lyrics that carry the same biting message as each mural. Liquid Death supported the music component as an extension of their #deathtoplastic environmental initiative.

One wall illustrates sea life using the pH spectrum colors in which the shells colored in acidic hues are riddled with polluted cracks and skulls. The other wall highlights the sea's ecological collapse and is paired with the project's namesake "Carbon Punishment."

The project can be heard here and seen here.
