Why Cape Town?
Cape Town, South Africa, was selected as a prime location for a Sea Walls project due to its magnificent coastline, ongoing efforts to promote ocean conservation, and unique history. South Africa’s coastline is home to a diverse range of marine life and habitats, but it also faces significant challenges from pollution, overfishing, mining, and climate change, which threaten the health and well-being of marine ecosystems.
Fortunately, South Africa has many organizations and individuals working tirelessly to protect and preserve its unique marine environment, including the Save Our Seas Foundation, dedicated to protecting sharks and other apex predators that play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. Through research, education, and conservation initiatives, the foundation works to raise awareness about the importance of preserving marine ecosystems and promoting sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities.
Cape Town’s history is marked by the injustice of apartheid, which denied many brown and black South Africans access to the ocean. However, organizations like the 9 Miles Project and the NSRI Pool swimming centers are working to promote water safety and access to the ocean, especially for those who were previously denied access. The 9 Miles Project aims to empower disadvantaged youth through surfing and ocean-based activities, promoting physical and mental well-being and providing a pathway to personal growth and development.
In addition to these efforts, the Beach Co-op is also dedicated to promoting ocean conservation through beach cleanups and education programs, raising awareness about plastic pollution and its impact on marine life.
Despite its complex history, Cape Town is a vibrant, multicultural city with a renewed focus on promoting inclusivity and environmental sustainability. Our Sea Walls program, focused on raising awareness about ocean conservation, is a perfect fit for Cape Town and South Africa. By bringing together talented artists from around the world, this project aims to showcase the beauty and fragility of our oceans while highlighting the critical work being done to protect them. Through this project, we aim to inspire a new generation of ocean advocates and help ensure that South Africa’s impressive coastline remains a treasure for all to enjoy.
