Story Behind This Mural
This mural at Westshore School was created in collaboration with our friends at Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs.
Artist Statement
The concept of the piece – "Escape" – comes from 13-year-old Cooper Bodeo-Lomicky, a winner in Bow Seat’s 2016 Ocean Awareness Student Contest. Normally attractive and brightly colored, the plastic in Cooper’s design becomes a darker element, a looming and ominous menace to marine wildlife and ecosystems; a shroud over what we may lose. If we don’t take action, will plastic form the reefs of the future? Human hands were added to the design to prompt the viewer to consider the following: What do we create? What do we leave behind? Who owns the problem? How can we shape a better future? What responsibility do we hold in our hands? The Focus
Plastic PollutionTake Action
Reduce your own plastic footprint by:
- Using a reusable water bottle and avoiding drinks bottled in plastic
- Bringing your own bag, cup, utensils, straw, etc.
- Shopping in bulk, reducing packaging waste
- Choosing reusable and compostable goods over less sustainable materials
