Story Behind This Mural

Artist Statement

Waiwai nō ka ʻāina i ke kanaka' which translates to 'Prosperity or wealth of the land comes through the people' is a reminder that the relationship between man and nature is one of reciprocity.   The water ripples included in the piece are a reference to not only the cultural importance of 'wai' but its historical importance to the island of Maui in Na Wai ʻEha, the four waters of the Iao, Waiheʻe, Waikapu, and Waiehu, vital sources of sustenance for the land and people. The ripples also represent how the actions of the past, present, and future generations have an effect on one another.  What our grandparents and parents have done has influenced our actions and thus our current actions will influence those of our kids and so on.
